Abstract

150,494. Mack, W. July 11, 1919. Mine and coliiery signals.-Signalling-apparatus for collieries comprises two co-axial pointers moving step by step over a dial, and a co-axial disk rotating step by step so as to expose a numeral through an aperture after rotation of one of the pointers through a certain angle, together with driving- mechanism of the ratchet-wheel type. A second signal causes one pointer to return to zero before registering it whilst the other pointer and the disk remain until released by the engine mechanism. Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the apparatus, and Fig. 3 shows an elevation of the driving-mechanism. Pawls mounted on a rod 2 connected to the pull rope, actuate ratchet-wheels 4, 5 connected to the pointer 7, 9 by a shaft 6 and a sleeve thereon respoctively. Another ratchet-wheel 12 mounted on another sleeve on the same shaft actuates the disk 10 and is moved by a projection 13 catching a projection 14 on the wheel 5. The wheels 4, 5 and 12 are engaged by pawls 23, 24 and have pulleys 4<a>, 5<a>, 12<a> integral with them on which are bands with weights attached to return them to zero. The pawl 22 engages a single notch on the wheel 26 integral with the wheel 4. The pull-rod 2 is connected to a dash-pot device which on the upward movement removes the pawl 23 from the wheels. The first pull of a second signal thus allows the wheel 5 to return to zero, but wheels 4, 12 are still retained in position by pawls 22, 24. The pawls 22, 23, 24 are loosely mounted on the rod 21 and a crossbar 25 turns with rod 21 to trip all the pawls on movement of a lever 20 by the engine. There is a gap in the teeth on the wheel 4 which keeps the pointer 7 at the signal 3, after the third puil, but further pulls rotate pointer 9 and after the necessary interval, disk 10. The Provisional Specification also states that a further plate signal bearing the word "Men" may be provided to be actuated when three pulls are signalled and retained in view until the engine has been brought to rest. Specification 14016/15 is referred to.
