Abstract
9148. McCartney, A. T. June 22. Mechanical telegraphs; bell signals.-A mine signalling-apparatus comprises a shaft h carrying a ratchet-wheel b' and a pointer i<1>. On the sbaft is loosely mounted a sleeve e carrying a ratchet-wheel b<1> and a pointer i<2>. The signals are conveyed to the shaft h by a lever c mounted thereon and having a pawl p<1> engaging the teeth of wheel b<2>. The forward movement of the shaft also causes the wheel b' to move forwardly by virtue of the pointer i<1> engaging a projection on the small pointer i<2>. Attached to the sleeve e and moving with the pointer i<2> is a disk f bearing round its circumference the numerals 3 and, in one position, the word "Men," so that when three strokes have been pulled, the word "Men" appears through a slot in the outer disk g in place of the numeral 3. To the . bottom of the lever c is attached a cord which passes over a pulley and bears at its free end a weight q<3>. The pulley is connected by a freewheel arrangement to a train of gear-wheels k, so that on the signal being made, the weight q' is raised and then falls slowly on to a tramp lever l to disengage a pawl p<2> from the wheel b<2> and allow the pointer i<1> to return under the influence of a weight q<1>. When the lever c is turned back, the pawl p<1> is freed from the wheel b<2> by rising over a shield p<4>. The pointer i<2> is returned by a weight q<2>, but not till released by the engine through a pawl p<3> and member t. Should the order not be complied with, a projection v<1> on the shaft h frees the pawl p<3> from the wheel b<1> immediately the following signal is given.
