Abstract
316,412. Shewring, H., Glover, W. T., and Meters, Ltd. July 6, 1928. Periodic-counter speed indicators.-In meters with maximum demand indicators the member which displaces the indicating pointer is returned at predetermined intervals to its initial position by interrupting the drive thereto from the operating part of meter by means of a mechanism operated by a spring which is maintained wound from the operating meter part and is controlled by the usual clockwork mechanism, means being provided to prevent overwinding of the spring. In the form shown, Figs. 1 and 4, the operating shaft a of the meter has an eccentric b oscillating a lever c carrying a pawl d driving a ratchet wheel e to wind up through gears f, g a spring within a barrel h, overwinding being prevented by a cam i and spring controlled bell-crank lever j cooperating with the tail of the pawl d. The shaft a through worm gearing n, o drives a wheel p to which is pivoted a pawl q adapted to drive a ratchet wheel u having a projection v co-operating with a pin w upon a member x carrying the indicating pointer y. During the time the pawl q drives the wheel u a spring z, Figs. 2 and 3, is wound up and upon release of the pawl q by means of an arm r on its spindle, due to the longitudinal movement of a conical-shaped member t, the spring z returns the wheel u to initial position. The longitudinal or axial movement of the member t is controlled by the clockwork mechanism 80 and the spring barrel h. The clockwork drives a wheel 8 and the barrel spring a shaft carrying a notched disc 2, Fig. 4, and a star wheel 5, Fig. 5. The wheel 8 has twentyfour teeth and rotates once in twenty-four hours so that once every hour a lever 6 is rocked to release the arm or catch 7 from a notch in the wheel 2 to permit the star wheel 5 to rotate. The wheel engages the end of an arm 10 and imparts a movement thereto and to an arm 11 connected by a link 12 to an arm 13, Fig. 1, the arm 13 being pivoted at 14 and connected to an arm 15 pivotally attached to the member t. An additional maximum demand indicator 16 may be provided operating at longer intervals of time. This indicator is secured to a spindle 34 and is operated by mechanism similar to that described above, the wheel 20 corresponding to the wheel p being driven through a reduction-gearing 21 from the wheel p and the conical member 23 being operated by an arm 22 through an arm 24 adapted to cooperate with the link 12 by the engagement of a roller 29 on the arm 24 with a recess' 30 in the link 12. when the arm is allowed to fall by withdrawing the supporting roller 25 of an arm 26. As shown this is effected once in twenty-four hours when the notch 4 in the clock driven disc 3 is engaged by a pin 28 on the lever 26.
