Abstract

Bell and gong signals.-A pneumatically-operated step-by-step signalling-device, particularly for use in mines, comprises a spring-returned plunger b by which impulses are sent through a connecting-tube d to a receiving-cylinder e, in which works a piston f connected to one end of a lever w. The lever m carries a pawl n adapted to engage pins o of a lantern-wheel p rotating it, against the action of a weight, one step for each impulse received. Backward movement of the wheel p is prevented by a spring detent v engaging a ratchet-wheel t. A disk bearing signal numerals and words rotates with the wheel p so that the numerals and words are successively displayed through apertures s in a plate u mounted in front of the disk. The detent v may be disengaged, so as to cancel a signal, by a lever w operated by pulling a wire x. When the wire x is pulled, the end of a lever z moves under the lever w, thus holding the detent out of action until the ratchet t returns to the zero position, whereupon a lug t<1> strikes against the lever z, releasing the lever w and detent v. A second piston working in a cylinder i is connected to, and moves with, the piston f to displace air, whereby a plunger k is driven out to strike a gong l. The pneumatic action may be adjusted by sleeves d<1>, j<1> which regulate apertures through which air may be allowed to escape.
