Abstract

Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-Liquid fuel is injected into a cylinder 1 by delivering it in measured quantities to a pump 3 to which burnt gases from the cylinder are admitted and highly compressed. The liquid er.ters the cylinder by the same port 10 as the gases enter the pump and it may be sprayed by a jet of gas issuing from the pump by a passage 24, Fig. 3. The invention is applicable to two- and fourstroke-cycle engines, and the fuel may be injected at the beginning or the end of the compression stroke. Each cylinder may have two pumps so that one can be cleaned while the other is in use.
