Abstract
168,463. Walther, F., and Walther, G. June 24, 1920. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; stocks. - Consists in cartridge-feed mechanism, for automatic guns, comprising a sliding block coupled to the breech-bolt and travelling in a straight line in the receiver, and a pivoted cartridge carrier operated by cam grooves in the sliding block. The invention is shown applied to a gun of the short barrel-recoil type having a toggle action and with a tubular magazine beneath the barrel. The cartridgefeed mechanism comprises a pivoted carrier 18 and a sliding block 11 operated by a projection 10 on the breechbolt 2. The carrier 18 is raised and lowered, during the closing movement of the breech-bolt, by cam-surfaces 27, 29, 25, Fig. 19, on the block engaging a stud 21 and a cam surface 24 on the carrier, the stud 21 sliding along the two-way slot 22, 23. When the breech is closed, the cartridges are held in the magazine by a projection 8 on the breech-bolt. A pivoted detent 30, Fig. 6, holds the carrier in the lowered position, during the opening of the breech, until it is released by a cartridge striking against it, as shown in Fig. 6. The releasing movement of the detent 30 raises a second detent 36, 38 adapted to retain the cartridges in the magazine when the carrier is raised. The tubular magazine is mounted in the forestock C, Fig. 27, which is pivoted at the front D and, when turned down, can be used as a handle to unscrew the barrel. The toggle-joint mechanism is actuated in the manner described in Specification 168,562.
