Abstract

7969. Farquhar, M. G., and Hill, A. H. April 3. Breech actions sliding barrel and breech-block.-The barrel and breech-bol of an automatic rifle recoil together against the action of a spring, and are then returned to the firing position. As soon as the firing position is reached, the breech is opened and the gun reloaded by means of a ribbonspring, which is wound up by a rack on the recoiling barrel. Fig. 2 is a part sectional elevation showing the rifle ready for firing. Fig. 4 is a side elevation with the breech open. The breech-bolt Q is operated by means of the "straight-pull" slide Q<1>. The rack E on the recoiling barrel F meshes with the toothed wheel D mounted on the axle 0 of the drum B containing the ribbon spring A, as shown in the transverse section, Fig. 7. The wheel D is pressed by a spring into engagement with the bevel faces of a disk H on the axle C, so that rotation of the axle by the wheel D takes place only during the recoil. The movement of the drum B is controlled by two studs K, L, shown in the transverse section, Fig. 6. When the parts are in the firing position, a stop K<1> of the drum B engages against the stud K. During the recoil, the stud L is pushed out by a projection on the barrel and the connected stud K is withdrawn so that the stop K<1> moves on till it is blocked by the stud L. When the barrel returns, the stud K is pushed out again by its spring and the stud L withdrawn to release the stop K<1> of the drum B, which is then turned by the ribbon-spring A to operate the breech action. The straight-pull slide Q<1> is connected by a rod P to a slide M working in a recess B' of the drum B and having a roller m working in the guideway O. As the drum rotates, the roller m of the slide M moves rearwardly to push back by means of the rod P the straight-pull slide Q<1> into the position shown in Fig. 4, and then returns to the original position with the stop K<1> blocked by the stud K.
