Luffing davits designed to equalize the power required to swing the davits and boat from an inboard to an outboard position comprise arms 4 pivoted to brackets 6 secured to the hull 1 at the juncture with the deck 2. The free ends of the inwardly inclined davits carry levers 7 to one end of which the boat tackle is secured, and to the other a link 16 pivoted at 17 to the free end of a crank 15 mounted on a fore and aft deck shaft 14 manually operated through the gears 21, 22 by the crank arm 24. The outer end of the crank 15 is also converted to an intermediate part of the davits by a link 19. The luffing of the davits from an inboard to an outboard position causes a partial rotation of the lever 7, and the point of attachment of the boat describes a substantially horizontal path during the luffing movement.
