Abstract

327,091. Turnbull, G. Feb. 28, 1929. Divided on 329,979. Rudders; steering-gear.-In lifeboats wherein a rudder is operated by connections from the hand gear passing round the sides of the boat to the tiller such hand gear is supported on or near a transverse bulkhead at the stern of the boat. Immediately behind the bulkhead there is a raised deck for the coxswain. The hand steering lever 13 is mounted in a socket 13<x> which is pivotally supported at 14 on a transverse bulkhead 10. An operating cable 18 is secured to lugs on the socket and led round leads 19 on the side of the boat to a tiller 16 which projects rearwardly from the rudder 15. The lever 13 may be removed when the boat is not under way. Aft of the bulkhead 10 is' a deck portion 11 which is lower than the passengers' seats 2 but on a level with the lower tier seats 3 and this deck forms a platform for the coxswain.
