Variable-speed gearing. -A cam upon the driving-element a, is made variable in effect by varying the inclination of plates b, b<1> articulated together in pairs by pins c. The outer ends of the plates b<1> are supported on rods e fixed in the element a. The outer ends of the plates b are secured to rods d, which are adapted to be angularly displaced in unison to make the pins c approach and recede from the axis of a driven shaft j. Toggle-links n, q connect rods r carried by a loose ring k to rings m rotatively connected to the shaft j as by ratchet clutches u. Springs s tend to keep the toggles n, q bent to bring rollers t on their joint pins b in the path of the plates b. When the plates b are in circular form, no drive is transmitted. As the inclination of the plates b, b<1> is increased, the toggles open and close with increasing amplitude, and an increasing speed is transmitted to the shaft j. Finally, the rollers t become jammed between the plates b and rings m, solid driving resulting.
