Abstract
158,789. Ricardo, H. R. Jan. 6, 1920. Spray carburettors.-In a carburettor for paraffin or other heavy fuel, the choke tube B surrounding the nozzle C is provided with holes B<1> through which exhaust gases are delivered. The exhaust gases are supplied by a pipe G leading from the exhaust-pipe of the engine and are delivered to an annular recess F surrounding the holes B<1>. The pipe G may communicate, directly with the recess F or may open into the top, bottom, or side of a chamber F<2> in the carburettor wall. The choke tube B is interchangeable. Fuel is supplied to the nozzle from a large float-chamber H through an orifice L, a vertical passage L', an horizontal passage L<2> leading to the bottom of a slow-running device, and a passage D leading therefrom to a recess A<2> at the base of the nozzle C. At starting, the float chamber H is filled with petrol through a filter H<3> and the heavy fuel supply is turned on, the petrol, which floats on the heavy fuel, being used up during the warming up of the engine. To enable the heavy fuel to be emptied from the carburettor in order that the float chamber may be charged with petrol for starting, passages are provided leading respectively from the bottom of the float chamber and from the slow-running device to a valve-controlled outlet. Part or the whole of the air supply to the mixing-chamber C' may be drawn in through an apertured sleeve surrounding the exhaust pipe.
