Abstract

Casting processes; electrioity, heating by.- Ferrous metals are subjected to an induced electric current during casting to retard cooling in the mould and thereby modify the characteristics of the resultant casting. The mould, Fig. 3, has a set of cavities 10, 11, 12, 13 connected by gates to form an annulus through which is arranged the core Q of a transformer, the annulus forming in effect the secondary winding of the transformer. A current is induced in the metal by passing an alternating, pulsating, or direct make-and-break current through the primary winding. Fig. 1 shows in plan four moulding-boxes A, B, C, D on the two limbs E, F, of a transformer core with which supplementary cores passing through the boxes make contact, the upper ends of the cores being connected by bridge-pieces.
