Abstract

1496223 Drive units having two rotary electric motors HANNING ELEKTRO-WERKE ROBERT BANNING 11 April 1975 [13 April 1974] 15041/75 Heading H2A] [Also in Division F2] A drive unit comprises two coaxial, axially-sequential, rotary electric motors 1, 2, motor 1 having a hollow rotor shaft 10 which is releasably secured to the rotor shaft 11 of motor 2 by means of a tie bolt 14 passing through the shaft 10, and the adjacent ends of the shafts 10, 11 having complementary cross-sections so that the end of shaft 11 is held within the end of shaft 10. The shaft ends may be frusto-conical, as shown, or they may have serrated or hexagonal profiles as in Figs 3, 4, 6, 7 (not shown). The drive unit may be used to provide different speeds in a washing machine programme, motor 1 being, e.g. an induction machine and motor 2 series wound. The adjacent ends of shafts 10, 11 may be supported by a common bearing 16 or by separate bearings (not illustrated).
