Cylinders, cooling.-The water in the cylinder jackets is kept at boiling point; the steam escapes through the pipe f to the radiator b, where it is condensed while the water flows by the by-pass g to the suction end of the pump c. As the steam pressure in the jacket rises, it tends to close the valve h and direct some of the water through the pipe f into the radiator, where it is cooled and serves to sweep off the surface the drops of condensed steam that tend to reduce the cooling efficiency of the radiator.
