Abstract
160,795. Mallory, H. C. March 24, 1921. Cylinders, cooling.-In cooling systems in which steam or vapour is generated in the cylinder jackets 4 and condensed in a condenser 10 and the liquid returned to the jacket, the temperature of the liquid is maintained by forming a partial vacuum in the jacket by a pump or by the suction in the induction pipe 21 acting through a pipe 20. The vacuum is regulated by a relief valve 18 on the condenser. The pipe may contain a steam trap, Fig. 2, comprising a rod 24 which expands sufficiently at the boiling point to close the outlet 23; at lower temperatures moist air passes the non-return valve 22. The pipe for returning the water of condensation may lead up to the water level in the jacket where the water overflows into a surrounding pipe which discharges into the bottom of the jacket. The steam trap may be situated in a chamber above the overflow. An additional radiator and condenser 26 may be used.
