Abstract

252,208. Landt, E. May 16, 1925, [Convention date]. Vapour engines.-Liquid air is evaporated and used alone expansively in an engine, or, with solid fuel injection, the engine works as a combined vapour and internal-combustion engine, or as an internal-combustion engine. The liquid air is contained in a tank 1 provided with double, metal or reinforced glass walls with a vacuum space between the walls coated with wood, bakelite, hard paper, or tarred felt. A double walled outlet pipe 3 with a vacuum space between the walls leads from the tank. A felt, conical valve 4 is connected to a handwheel by a vulcanized fibre, hard paper &c. spindle which passes through a casing containing a safety valve. An insulated pump chamber 12 with a ported supply chamber 13 and oppositely-working plungers 15 of graphite, soap-stone, &c., is connected to the outlet 3. The pump forces the air past a spring- pressed ball-valve in the working space of the engine which has oppositely-moving pistons 19, 20 connected to three cranks on the main shaft 26. Insulated heating-ribs for conveying the friction heat from the driving-gear in the casing to the cylinder, are provided. In large motors a water jacket is used, the water being heated by a heat interchanger similar to a motor-car cooler. for small power, a single stroke of the pump 12 may correspond to a number of strokes on the motor, a pressure vessel being interposed between the pump and motor which may comprise one or more cylinders and may work compound. A fuel nozzle 35 connected to a pump is arranged in the cylinder. The motor may work as a Diesel engine with solid injection and ignition by compression. For the use of the motor as an internalcombustion engine a cooling and charging pump is connected to the port 31 which serves as a scavenging opening, the exhaust passing out through port 30 which is relatively elongated to permit the exhaust to begin before the scavenging.
