Abstract

192,489. Collins, E. C., and Grece, E. S. Nov. 2, 1921. Motive power, applications of.-In a sulphurdioxide or anhydrous-ammonia plant applicable to motor vehicles &c. and comprising a preheater utilizing engine exhaust, a heater, an engine, and a condenser, an excessive-pressure actuated controlling valve is arranged between the condenser and the engine, and a relief valve between the condenser and the heater. The receiver 1 is connected to a valve 4, Fig. 2, wherein the excessive pressure in the engine supply-pipe acts on a piston 5 carrying a spring-pressed adjustable abutment 9 to close the port in the rod 6, and the outlet pipe 7 of which is connected to a pump 11 operated by an eccentric 34 on the engine shaft. The fluid is discharged through a pipe 14 in a preheater 15, which receives the engine exhaust passing to the condenser 58, into a coil 16 in a heater 17, comprising a boiler 18 and a burner 20 controlled by a thermostat 21, and thence to the engine supply-pipe 25. The engine has four cylinders and is provided with a common rotary inlet valve 46, piston-controlled main exhaust ports, and auxiliary exhaust lift valves 49 in the pistons operated by tappets 50 on the connecting- rods 32, Fig. 5. The pistons may clear the ports 47, or have ports 51 to exhaust the crank-casing 30. A pump 37 forces lubricant through the shaft stuffing-box 42 which is surrounded by a water-cooling chamber 41. The condenser is air cooled, and the condensate passes the reservoir 1. A relief valve 61 permits the escape of gas to the condenser. An application of the plant to a motor road vehicle is described wherein the condenser is arranged at the front of the car, and the heater is supplied with fuel under pressure from a tank at the rear. Starting is effected by an electric motor which also supplies an initial charge of liquid to the heater.
