Abstract

201,632. Klech, S. May 2, 1922. Compressed-air engines.-A power plant comprises a steam-driven air compressor which supplies a tank from which compressed air engine cylinders are fed, and a series of water-jacketed cylinders which may be the engine cylinders. The steam cylinder may be supplied from the jackets, in which electric heating coils may be disposed. The apparatus shown comprises two series of water-jacketed cylinders 10, each series being cast in a block and the two blocks disposed in a V, the base of which is constituted by a casing containing a crank common to the two series. Heating coils supplied by a battery 17, Fig. 3, may heat the water in the jackets. In the space between the two series of cylinders is located a compressor comprising an air cylinder 19 and a steam cylinder 18. Air from the valve chest 21 of the air cylinder is led into tanks 23, and thence through pipes 26 to the middle cylinders 10<1> of the two series which constitute compressed-air engine cylinders. The other cylinders may be compressed-air or internal-combustion engine cylinders. Steam is supplied to the valve-chest 20 of the steam cylinder 18 from the water jackets through a pipe 29 fitted with check velves. The exhaust steam from the cylinder 18 passes to a condenser 32, Fig. 3, cooled by a fan 33 driven from the crankshaft 15 of the cylinders 10. From the condenser a pipe leads to a pump 34 by which the water is forced back to the jackets. The pump is driven through toothed gearing 49, 50 and a toothed wheel 47 on the worm shaft engaging a pinion 46 on a sleeve 40 loose on the shaft 15, this sleeve being clutched by a handle 56, rod 55, and lever 54 either to a clutchpiece 41 on the shaft 15 or to a pulley 43 driven from an electromotor 35. A spring switch 60 is adapted to be closed by a finger 59 on the rod 55 to complete the circuit through the battery 17 and the electromotor. A second spring switch 68 is interposed in the circuit, which is closed by the rod of a piston subject to the pressure in the water jacket.
