Abstract

Superheating by hot gases.-A compressor for supplying air to a combined steam generator and superheater, Fig. 5, comprises a series of pump pistons arranged coaxially with cylinders working upon a two-stroke internal combustion cycle. One unit of the compressor is shown in Fig. 1 and consists of a pump cylinder B in line with an internal combustion cylinder A. The air delivered by the compressors is mixed with steam from a drum d, Fig. 5, and the mixture is heated by its passage over a series of tubes a through which are circulated exhaust gases from the cylinders of the internal-combustion engine. The mixture enters at m and after traversing a passage c in the central division plate f is discharged at m<11> for use in a motor which may be a turbine or a reciprocating engine. The combined generator and superheater comprises a series of inner tubes b, through which is circulated the cooling water from the cylinder jackets of the compressor shown in Fig. 1, and outer tubes a through which the exhaust gases are passed from the chamber i.
