Abstract

Superheating by gases other than furnace gases. -The heat of the exhaust gases of an internalcombustion engine is utilised for generating saturated steam, which is superheated to a temperature of about 700‹ to 800‹ C., then mixed with a combustible mixture, and admitted to the engine cylinder. The exhaust gases are passed through tubes or coils in a generating chamber and a superheating chamber, and may then pass to a condenser for recovering the water. In one form, Fig. 1, the exhaust passes from a pipe 5 through coils 3, 6 located in the chambers 1, 2. Water is sprayed on the coil 3 from a water pipe 10, and the resulting steam is conveyed to the super-heating chamber 2 by a pipe 12 having apertures 13 within the coil 6. The superheated steam passes by. an outlet pipe 16 to the inlet manifold of the engine. In Fig. 2, the coil 6 is enclosed within a tube 7 coiled about the generating chamber 1, the annular space between the tubes forming the superheating chamber. The chamber 1 and coils 6. 7 are enclosed in an outer casing 20, into which the superheated steam escapes through perforations 18 in the tube 7. In a further form, Fig. 3, water is sprayed into a generator chamber 1 enclosing three parallel pipes 3, 3<1>, 3<11> supplied with exhaust from chamber 24. The pipes 3, 3<1>, 3<11> are continued through superheating coils 7, 7<1>, 7<11> in an outer casing 25, which has an outlet 15 for the superheated steam and a removable plug 27 for inspection and cleaning.
