Abstract

Motor power plant.-Steam raised from the cooling-water in a generator formed on the exhaust pipe of an internal-combustion engine is utilized in the front ends of the cylinders, from which it may be exhausted either into a turbine or a low-pressure cylinder. A twocylinder engine is described in which steam is admitted through slide valves to the front ends of the combustion cylinders and exhausted into a low-pressure steam cylinder. Steam is raised in a generator P, Fig. 3, which surrounds the exhaust pipe D<2> and passes to the cylinders through an annular chamber H, the feed-water being supplied from the cooling-jackets through pipes O, which open into a cup R having an annular outlet adjacent to the exhaust pipe. The level Q of the water collecting in the generator is controlled by a float-feed device, which regulates the quantity of water passing to the cylinder jackets through a pipe K. The cooling-water, before entering the jackets B, passes through an annular chamber I having Galloway tubes J, and a chamber H<1>, both of which surround the exhaust pipe. The cylinder jackets B and the cover jackets S communicate through pipes (not shown).
