Abstract
407,590. Generating combustion products under pressure. KINGSTON, J. R., and POWELL, W. H., Engineer-in-Chief's Department, G.P.O., London. July 11, 1933, No. 19638. [Class 51 (i).] In a combustion-product engine in which a rotary blower 4 is used for the first stage of compression and a reciprocating compressor or compressors 3 for the final stage or stages, with inter-coolers 5 between the stages, the combustion chamber 2 comprises a comparatively long quartz tube 16 of relatively small bore, surrounded by a fireclay or other refractory and opaque covering protected by a layer 17 of a resilient nonconducting material such as asbestos or slag wool enclosed in an outer metal casing 26. The quartz tube 16 preferably has a length of at least ten times its diameter and at least five times the length of the piston stroke of the power cylinder. The fuel pump 6 is actuated by a cam 10 driven from the engine crank-shaft 11. Between the compressor 3 and the combustion chamber, the air may be passed through the tubes of a counterflow recuperator heated by the exhaust from the engine. In a modification, the combustion chamber is in the form of one or more long U-shaped tubes. Specifications 142,051 and 246,692, [both in Class 7 (i)], are referred to.
