Abstract
203,146. Salmon, P. Aug. 2, 1922. Turning-gear.-A two-stroke coaxial cylinder engine which may be used for starting another engine drives through a swashplate 18 a shaft 19 geared through pinions 21, 22 to a second shaft 23, on which is a flywheel 24 and a magneto 25. When used as a starter, a worm 26 on the shaft 23 drives a wheel 27 forming the driving element of a friction clutch closed by a hand-adjusted screw. The driven element is connected to the ma.in engine shaft by a dog clutch, actuated by a lever and a rod passing through the screw for the friction clutch. Starting.-The engine with secondary shaft driven as above may drive an air or combustible-mixture pump for supplying the main engine with fluid under pressure at starting. In one arrangement, the pump piston is mounted on the same piston rod as the power pistons. In another arrangement, the pump cylinders 35 are parallel with the power cylinders, the piston being driven by the lever 40. In a modification of this arrangement, the pump cylinders may be arranged on one side of the power cylinders and the secondary shaft &c. on the other side. When the pump is used to supply combustible mixture, the mixture may be drawn from the carburettor supplying the coaxial power cylinders.
