Abstract

141,723. Maschinenfabrik Augsburg- Nurnberg Akt.-Ges. Feb. 14, 1919, [Convention date]. Four-stroke-cycle engines.-In a heavy-oil engine, air for combustion is compressed by a pump to a temperature sufficiently high to vaporize the fluid, the compressed air being admitted to a reservoir, or directly into the cylinder, without doing external work, thus avoiding loss of heat during the transfer. According to the construction shown in Fig. 1, air is compressed in a pump a which discharges through a valve d into a reservoir ! i for supplying two working cylinders b, c. Air is admitted slowly through valves e, e<1> to the cylinders b, c, the pressures at the ends of the suction strokes being approximately that of the atmosphere, the temperature of the charge remaining unaltered. Liquid fuel is injected into the cylinders b, c through orifices adjacent to valves e, e<1>, the fuel being induced by the flow of air through the inlet valves. A passage places the float chamber iri communication with the reservoir i. The pump and working cylinders and the reservoir i may be surrounded by cooling jackets.
