Abstract
1444701 Coating by detonation AI ZVEREV MA PUDZINSKY VI SHESTERNENKO and MP DUDNIK 9 July 1974 [9 July 1973] 30418/74 Heading C7F [Also in Division Fl ] Apparatus for explosive deposition of inorganic coatings e.g. Ni, Co, W, Ti on a workpiece C includes a tubular combustion chamber 1 to which is fed a batch of powdered coating material from a proportioner 2 and an explosive mix from a mixing chamber 5 via a safety coil 3 and a backfire extinguishing device 12 including a housing (13), Fig. 2, (not shown), divided internally by a partition (14) of porous refractory material, e.g. a metal ceramic alloy, and a slotted grating (17) to break up any flame entering the device from the safety coil. The mixing chamber has inlet control valves 9, 10, 11 for fuel, e.g. acetylene, an oxidant, e.g. oxygen, and an inactive gas, e.g. nitrogen, which mix and then pass through a three-way connector 22. Two other inlets 26, 27 to the connector 22 communicate with a source of inactive gas, one via a gas-pressure reducer. The two inlets are used respectively (a) to scavange the safety coil upon feeding the explosive mix to the combustion chamber, and (b) to scavenge the coil and combustion chamber 1 after ejection of the coating material. The proportioner includes a spool 31 axially slidable to move a cross-bore therein from communication with a hopper 33 to communication with the combustion chamber 1 via line 34. The open end of the combustion chamber 1 may be of square or circular section, or may carry an interchangeable swivel nozzle (55), Figs. 9 and 10, (not shown). Use may be made of detachable combustion chambers of round, square, rectangular or other cross-section.
