Abstract

959,946. Spraying metals. METCO Inc. May 21, 1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 20229/63. Heading B2F. A wire-fed spray gun for spraying molten metal comprises a wire feed roller 30 driven by a gas turbine, a gear 32 connected alongside the roller 30 and permanently engaging a gear 33, and a second wire feed roller 31 connected coaxially with the gear 33 and adapted to be pivoted towards and away from the roller 30 on actuation of a slidable valve member 61 which controls the flow of air to a pneumatic piston and cylinder device 43, 44. The roller 31 is mounted in a housing 40 which is pivoted at 41 and moved in a counter-clockwise direction by a plunger 47 when a blast of air is allowed to pass from a passage 60 by the valve member 61 to a passage 57 and then through further passages 56, 50 and 51 to a cylinder space 52. The roller 31 thus moves towards the roller 30 and engages and feeds the wire into a passage 14, Fig. 2. The valve member 61 is provided with a push button 62 and a cam member 68 arranged so that the passage 57 is connected alternately to the passage 60 and to the atmosphere. A screw 42 provides an adjustment of the pivotal position of the housing 40. Oxygen, air, and a fuel gas such as acetylene or propane all pass through portions of a valve 10 and the oxygen and fuel gas mix in passages 19 and pass as a combustible mixture to an annular groove 20 leading to burner orifices 22 in a nozzle 21. The wire passes through the central passage 23 of the nozzle and air enters a space 26, Fig. 2, and passes through passages 27 and along the outer surface of the nozzle 21. The drive from the turbine to the gear 32 includes two worm devices, Fig. 5 (not shown).
