Abstract

958,510. Spraying fusible materials. COAST METALS Inc. Nov. 1, 1960 [Dec. 2, 1959], No. 37578/60. Heading B2F. A flame spray torch has a tip 16 with gas jet orifices 120 arranged in a U-shaped pattern so that the flame is open at the top, and powder is dropped from a nozzle 21 into that flame opening and sprayed on to the work. The nozzle 21, which is supplied from a holder 20 via a flexible tube 72, is located ahead of the tip face so that the falling powder stream avoids eddy currents at the face. A valve system controlling powder flow includes a rod 74 sliding in a sleeve 76, and normally urged against the flexible tube 72 by a spring 82 acting on a collar 80 of the rod to squeeze the tube closed. The sleeve 76 is also urged against the tube by a spring 100. To provide powder flow the rod and sleeve are urged rearwardly by a pivoted trigger 86 which firstly acts upon a bar 90 on the sleeve to withdraw the sleeve from contact with the tube, and the sleeve, in turn, contacts the collar 80 to withdraw the rod. The rear end of the latter extends into an opening 78 and may be held in a desired position by a set screw 116. The sleeve 76 slides through an outer sleeve 106 and may be held in a desired position by a set screw 110. The latter can thus hold both the sleeve and rod in positions which only partially open the powder tube. Fuel gas and oxygen are fed through tubes 54 and 55 and valves 64, 65 respectively to the gun tip. Powder flow from the holder 20 is assisted by an electrical vibrator 32 operated by a press-button switch 44, and by the provision of a smooth surfaced metal plate 30 fitted against the inner surface of the holder.
