Abstract

An electric arc torch comprises a generally cylindrical electrically conductive nozzle 13, a member 10 of insulating and heat resisting material defining a generally cylindrical passage 11 coaxial with the nozzle, the internal diameter <PICT:0967445/C6-C7/1> of the nozzle being equal to or greater than that of the passage, a non-consumable rod electrode 12 extending through the passage 11 with the arcing tip approximately level with the junction of the passage 11 and the nozzle 13, the diameter of the passage 11 being from one and one-half to four times the diameter of the electrode 12, and means 18 for introducing into the nozzle 12, downstream of the passage 11, material to be sprayed from the torch. The length of the passage 11 is preferably from one-half to one and one-half times its diameter, and the length of the nozzle 13 is preferably from one and one-half to two and one-half times the diameter thereof. Argon or other monatomic inert shielding gas is fed into the member 10 which is attached to the body of a conventional welding torch. As shown, the nozzle 13 which may be slightly divergent or convergent is attached to the member 10 by a threaded collar 19 and is water cooled. Metal or other powder to be sprayed on to a workpiece may be entrained in a flow of argon through the pipe 18. The spraying of a hard surfacing chromium-cobalt-tungsten alloy powder on to aluminium sheet and steel, and aluminium or alumina powder on to steel are mentioned.
