Abstract

1434021 Thread tensioning ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 13 June 1973 [13 June 1972] 27583/72 Heading D1C In a thread tensioning device thread is drawn from a supply at variable speed by a driven roller 1 and an idler 2, formed into a loop by a lever, and may be then drawn off at low constant tension. The thread passes through an eye on a lever 4 and over a light frictionless pulley 6, the weight of the lever 4 providing the tension in the loop. If the loop varies in size a feed back system comprising an air valve 5 feeding bellows 3 which move a lever 9 pivoted at 8 to vary the pressure of the idler on the driven roller 1 and alter the slippage of the thread compensates and tends to maintain the loop within predetermined limits. If additional tension is needed a standard tensioner 7 is provided, or the pulley 6 is braked. In a modification a skid may replace the idler wheel 2, and the feedback system may be electric.
