Abstract

142,943. Willington, A. Feb. 18, 1919. Stopping way and steering by plates at the side.-For steering and stopping way, flying-boats, ships, submarines, and other water-craft are fitted with one or more pairs of hinged brakes at the sides adapted to be opened out separately or simultaneously at right-angles to the course of the craft. The Figure shows brakes c which normally fit in recesses or box casings in the sides of the craft, and may be strengthened at the top and bottom by plates c<2>, c<3> the latter of which may be in the form of a grating. The brake may be released by operating spring catches or locks, and be opened outwards and backwards by springs and restored by levers, chains or springs; or they may be opened and closed by chains, rods, or levers.
