Abstract

1420655 Tobacco filters ROTHMANS OF PALL MALL (AUSTRALIA) Ltd and LANTOR OF AUSTRALIA PTY Ltd 18 Sept 1973 [27 Sept 1972] 43692/73 Heading A2C [Also in Divisions D1 and D2] A tobacco smoke filter is produced from a bonded non-woven fabric comprising wool fibres, by folding the sheet about its longitudinal axis and compressing 1 - 1¢ inch length, 18-22 micron Merino wool may comprise 75-100% of the fibres the balance being cellulose acetate, cellulose, reconstituted cellulose, polyolefin, polyamide, polyethylene terephthalate or polyvinyl chloride-polyvinylacetate copolymer. The wool is scoured, carbonised, fully bleached by peroxide or perborate, optionally blended by carding and air laid to form a random fibre web. The web is passed through an aqueous dispersion of polyacrylate, acrylonitrile - butadiene copolymer or styrene-butadiene copolymer incorporating melamine-formaldehyde hardner to promote cross-linking. Excess polymer is removed and the web passed through a 250- 350‹F heating tunnel to dry the web and cure or cross-link the binder. The web is slit into 5 inch wide strips and each strip passes through the nip between heated ribbed rolls 6 to impart a quasicorrugation in longitudinal direction of the fabric. Pre-folder 8 then turns the edges of the strip upward and over towards the centre whilst the centre of the strip is raised. A cylindrical plug is then produced by trumpet 9 and heated condensing tube 10. The plug is then converted into wrapped filters in conventional apparatus. The wool filter may entirely replace the celluolse filter in a filtertipped cigarette (Fig. 2A, not shown), it may be sandwiched between the tobacco and the conventional filter (Fig. 2C, n.s.) or form the middle part of a three part filter (Fig. 2B, n.s.). The filters may also be used in pipes and cigarette holders.
