Abstract

1417803 Gas discharge display panels MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 26 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972 29 Feb 1972 22 Nov 1972 (3) 28 Dec 1972 (3)] 9390/73 Heading H1D A gas discharge display panel has a filling of gas at approximately atmospheric pressure p and cross-bar electrodes 13 and 14 separated by a distance d such that the product p Î d lies within the range between 5 to 20 mm. Hg cm. and determines an approximately minimum firing potential. The gas may be a Ne/A mixture, and the electrodes may be Ni, Al, SnO 2 or In 2 O 3 . The negative electrodes 13 are coated with an insulating layer 17, e.g. of SiO 2 having openings 18 opposite the electrodes 14. The latter may be similarly coated (Fig. 9, not shown) for A.C. operation. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) a protective coating of semi-conductive material is applied over the whole of the surfaces of the electrodes 13 facing the discharge space. The material may be an oxide of a rare earth element, e.g. CeO 2 , Tb 4 O 7 , Nd 2 O 3 or Sm 2 O 3 , a Ce/Ni alloy, a Ce/Co alloy or ZrO. In a further alternative embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) a protective coating of similar semiconductive material is provided in the openings I8 (Fig. 4) and may also extend over the insulating layer 17. In a further alternative embodiment, Fig. 10, adapted for colour display, red, green and blue phosphor strips 22, 23 and 24 or dots deposited on a substrate 12 are covered by a thin glass sheet 25 carrying transparent electrode strips 14, e.g. of Au or In 2 O 3 . Electrode strips 13 carried by a substrate 11 are covered by an insulating eoating 17 except at positions opposite the electrodes 14. The latter are spaced apart a distance less than the width of a strip. A coating of material opaque to UV rays may be provided in the spaces between the electrodes (Fig. 11, not shown) or the electrode strips may have an edging of opaque metal (Fig. 12, not shown).
