1458454 Gas discharge display panels BURROUGHS CORP 21 Aug 1974 [20 Sept 1973] 36674/74 Heading H1D A gas discharge display panel 10 includes a base-plate 20 carrying an array of first electrodes 60, a face plate 150 carrying an array of second electrode 130, with an array of third electrodes 70 disposed therebetween and forming a first layer of scanning cells with the first electrodes 60 and a second layer of display cells with the second electrodes 130, said third electrodes 70 comprising metal strips disposed side-by-side adjacent to each other and carrying insulating layers 74 on one or both of their edges. The electrodes 60 and 130 may be metal wire or strips or may be plated, evaporated or otherwise formed in slots 30 and 154 in the glass or ceramic plates 20 and 150. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) the slots 30 and 154 are omitted. The electrodes 60 and 130 are seated on the plates 20 and 150 and are spaced apart by the insulating layers 74 which are made thicker than the electrodes 70. The electrodes 70 may overlap (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) in which case an insulating layer 74 is provided at one edge only of each electrode, and the overlapping portions may be made thinner than the remainder of the electrodes. The panel may be made by supporting at least four plates 20 carrying wires 60 on a rotatable four-sided mandrel and then winding strip 70 around the plates as a continuous ribbon which is later cut to separate the panels and to form the individual strips. The panel includes a filling of a gas such as argon, neon or xenon, preferably a Penning mixture, and a small quantity of mercury vapour to minimize cathode sputtering.
