1317222 Gas discharge display panels BURROUGHS CORP 27 Nov 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 56389/70 Heading H1D A display panel comprises a glass plate 90 embedding an array of parallel electrodes 80 having apertures 100 in line with apertures 110 in the plate which is sealed between upper and lower glass or ceramic plates 20<SP>1</SP> and 20 to form a gas-filled enclosure provided with upper and lower arrays 60<SP>1</SP> and 60 of parallel electrodes disposed at right-angles to the electrodes 80. In the arrangement shown wire electrodes 60<SP>1</SP> and 60 are secured in slots 30<SP>1</SP> and 30 in the upper and lower plates 20<SP>1</SP> and 20 respectively by a cement or fused glass frit. Alternatively these electrodes may be flat strips and may be plated or evaporated into the seats, the unfilled portions of which provide paths along which excited particles can diffuse between the cells formed by the lower portions of the apertures 110. In alternative arrangements (Figs. 4, 5 and 6, not shown) one or both sets of electrodes 60<SP>1</SP> and 60 are in contact with the upper or lower surface 113, 114 of the plate 90. If the electrodes 60 are in contact with the surface 114, particle diffusion channels between cells are provided in this surface. The gas filling may be Ne, A, or Xe singly or in combination, and Hg may be added to minimize cathode sputtering. The panel may be operated as described in Specification 1,317,221.
