Abstract
1377631 Gas discharge display panels SPERRY RAND CORP 12 Nov 1971 [18 Nov 1970] 52651/71 Heading H1D Gas discharge display apparatus comprises a visual display means 13 incorporating a plurality of gas discharge cells, electrode means 14, 16 energizable to provide glow discharge of the gas, and a plurality of apertured electrodes 21 to 26 arranged in a stacked configuration with the apertures in register and defining a plurality of channels extending between the electrode 14 and the display means 13, the electrodes 21 to 26 being progressively divided into portions as shown, with the portions connected to addressing circuits 51 for selectively applying either a positive or a negative potential to each portion. A discharge is attracted from the electrode 14 through channels defined by positive portions but is inhibited from passing through channels defined by negative portions thus enabling any cell of the display means 13 to be selected by the application of suitable binary signals to the electrodes. Electrode 14 is a cathode plate forming with a spacer 15 and an anode plate 16 a reservoir for containing ionizable gas, e.g. a Penning mixture of 99À5% neon and 0À5% argon at a pressure of 40 torr. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the spacer 15 and anode plate 16 are omitted. The cells 13 comprise a cathode plate 70, insulating plate 71, and a transparent metal anode film 72, e.g. tin oxide, disposed on the surface of a cover-plate 74. Alternatively the anode may be a metal mesh or a plate with sealed apertures. The electrodes 21-26 are separated from each other by insulating plates 29-33 and are separated from the reservoir 11 and cells 13 by insulating plates 34 and 69. The electrodes may be an alloy of 51% Ni and 49% Fe, and the insulators may be soda-lime glass. The amplitudes of the positive-potentials applied to the electrodes 21- 26 are increased in progressive fashion to correspond to increasing distances of the plates from the cathode plate 14.
