Abstract

1363672 Gas discharge display tubes and panels THOMSON-CSF 21 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 44041/71 Heading H1D A. data display device of the gas discharge type comprises in combination at least one anode 8, a plurality of cathodes 4 separated from one another and from said anode, means 2 for applying voltages separately to each cathode, means defining a plurality of cavities each containing one of said cathodes, a screen electrode 6 and insulating elements 5 and 7 disposed respectively between said cathodes 4 and said screen electrode 6 and between said screen electrode 6 and said anode 8. The firing and extinguishing voltages of the anode-cathode gaps are controlled by the bias voltage applied to the screen electrode 6 so the device exhibits a "memory" effect. In the unit shown the cathodes 4 are seven metal segments arranged in "figure 8" formation, and the apertures in the insulating elements 5 and 7, screen electrode 6 and anode 8 are shaped correspondingly. In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) the apertures are circular, forming cells which are addressed by a cross-bar system of cathodes and anodes, the anodes being common to a plurality of display units. The device may alternatively be operated with the electrode 8 functioning as a cathode and the electrodes 4 functioning as anodes.
