Abstract

1458249 Gas discharge display panels BURROUGHS CORP 26 Nov 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 51176/74 Heading H1D A display panel comprises a gas-filled housing, a plurality of columns of interleaved cathode electrode pairs 50, 80 supported on a surface 23 in said housing, and a plurality of anode electrodes 140 arranged in rows, each anode being sufficiently wide to cooperate with both cathodes in each column that it crosses. The cathodes 50 and 80 are parts of comb-like members 30 and 60 having lead portions 40 and 70 to which connections are made at the ends 40A and 70A. A reset cathode 40R and keepalive cathode and anode 40 KK and 40 KA are also provided. A layer 90 of insulating material formed over the cathodes includes a single elongated slot or a plurality of short slots 93 overlying reset cathode 40R and a plurality of columns of alternating narrow rectangular openings 100 and circular openings 110 exposing parts of the cathodes 50 and 80 which form scanning and display cathodes respectively. The rows of electrode pairs are defined by insulating spacer rods 120. Transparent strip anodes 140 are secured below a glass cover plate 130 and covered by a coating 150 of opaque insulating material having apertures 160 in alignment with the openings 110. The panel is sealed at the edges with glass frit and filled with neon or argon at a pressure of 100 to 300 torr. plus mercury vapour. A driving circuit is illustrated in block form (Fig. 6, not shown). In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the cathodes 50 and 80 are arranged so that each scanning cathode 50 lies between two display cathodes 80 and the rods 120 divide the openings 100 into two parts adjacent to different anodes. Thus each scanning cathode controls the discharges from two display cathodes.
