Abstract
1,263,430. Glow discharge lamps. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 17 Nov., 1970 [28 Nov., 1969], No. 54587/70. Heading H1D. A display device includes a cell containing an excitable gas and having first and second opposed walls 21 and 23, the outer surface of said first wall 21 carrying a transparent electrode 25, a removable member 30 incorporating electrodes 32 corresponding to a pattern to be displayed, and retaining means for maintaining the removable member 30 in engagement with the outer surface of said second wall 23, said first wall 21 forming the front wall of the device, and the arrangement being such that, upon applying suitable potentials to said transparent electrode 25 and said electrodes 32, a discharge will be created in said cell causing a display corresponding to the configuration of said electrodes 32 to be visible from in front of said first wall. The walls are secured together by glass solder or glass cement, and the cell then evacuated and filled with gas through a conduit 24. The electrode 25 may be of cadmium oxide, tin oxide or gold deposited by conventional means. Electrodes 32 forming a 7-bar matrix or any other configuration and each connected to a terminal 33 are coated on or embedded in an insulating card 30 which is held against plate 23 by non- conductive leaf springs. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the apertured plate 22 is omitted and the cell is formed by etching a depression in the facing surfaces of plates 21 or 23 or in only one of these surfaces. In a further alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the display electrodes are deposited on a circular rotatable insulating disc and are held against the plate by the resilience of the disc. Further alternative embodiments comprise tubular arrangements of circular or rectangular cross-section (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown) in which an annular cell is formed by a space between two tubes which are sealed together. The display electrodes are mounted on a plug which is slid into the inner tube.
