Abstract

1,232,722. Glow discharge lamps. FUJITSU Ltd. 12 June, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 29951/69. Heading H1D. A gas discharge display device comprises a pair of elements, at least one of which is transparent, each having a plurality of mutually isolated conductive layers 5 or 10 serving as electrodes formed on an inner surface of an insulating substrate 4 or 9, and a layer 6 or 11 of an insulating material overlaying said conductive layers, an insulator 7 between said elements defining a space 8 which is filled with ionizable gas. The electrodes 5, 10 may be thin films of Ag or tin oxide on glass plates 4, 9, and the insulating layers 6, 11 may be silicon nitride deposited to a thickness of about 10 Á by sputtering, evaporation or screen printing. The insulator 7 may be glass or silicon oxide several tens of microns thick with a plurality of cells 8 formed by photo-etching. Alternative insulating materials are Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , Ta 2 O 5 and BaTiO 3 . In a modified device (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the insulator 7 comprises two sets of insulating strips crossing at right-angles to provide intercommunicating cells. The edges of the device are hermetically sealed with a low melting point glass or other bonding agent. The gass filling may be He, Ne or a mixture of either of these gases with a small quantity of N.
