Abstract

1427424 Gas discharge display panels FUJITSU Ltd 21 March 1973 [27 March 1972] 13491/73 Heading H1D Areas 11 of luminescent material provided adjacent each discharge region of a gas discharge display panel are surrounded by a lightattenuating dielectric layer 9 to prevent interference between adjacent areas. The luminescent material may be zinc-oxide or zinc-silicate. The dielectric layer 9 may be a low-melting point glass which includes PbO as a main component and a very small percentage of oxides of impurities such as Co, Ni or Cr, the amount of which determines the degree to which the glass is impervious to light. The areas 11 together with dielectric layers 9 and 10 and electrodes 12 are supported by a glass plate 8. Further orthogonally disposed electrodes defining discharge regions with the electrodes 12 are supported on a second glass plate (not shown) which may or may not support luminescent material. The plates are separated by a discharge space which is filled with He plus a very small amount of Xe. The luminescent material need not extend to the same level as the dielectric layers 9 and 10 (Fig. 5, not shown) and need not extend to the plate 8 (Fig. 6, not shown). In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7, areas 21 of luminescent material with a surrounding dielectric layer 22 are supported on a plate 19 facing a second plate 13 supporting X electrodes 14 covered by a dielectric layer 15 supporting Y electrodes 16 and extensions 17 of the X electrodes covered by a dielectric layer 18. In a further alternative embodiment (Figs. 8A and 8B, not shown) the X and Y electrodes of Fig. 7 are replaced by segment electrodes for displaying numerals.
