Abstract

1401062 Manufacture of gas discharge display panels SONY CORP 30 June 1972 [1 July 1971] 30824/72 Heading CIM [Also in Division H1] A method of making a gas discharge display device comprises the steps of forming a first electrode array including a plurality of electrodes 24 on an insulating base plate 2, depositing a first insulating layer 40 on the first electrode array, forming a second electrode array including a plurality of electrodes 66c to 69c on the first insulating layer so as to cross the first electrode array, and forming a plurality of apertures 95 at each crossing point of the second and first electrode arrays from the second electrode array to the first electrode array through the insulating layer. The apertures 95 form display cells, and the construction of a panel having there units each of 5 x 4 cells for displaying there digits is described in detail (Figs. 1 to 7, not shown). The arrangement shown is a cross-section of one unit and comprises a second insulating layer 70 and a third electrode plate 90c which enables the unit to be operated selectively. The electrodes may be silver, the insulating layer glass, and the apertures may be formed by etching or by sandblasting. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 16 to 18, not shown), the apertures are frusto-conical in form.
