Abstract
1356771 Gas discharge display panels BURROUGHS CORP 7 March 1972 [19 March 1971] 10471/72 Heading H1D A gas discharge display panel having scanning cells 60 defined by a crossed array of scanning anodes 40 and scanning cathodes 50, the latter having apertures 70 positioned one at each cell, and aligned display cells 90 coated with phosphor 94 and formed in an insulating plate 80 provided at its upper surface with display anodes 100, is employed to produce a display in two or more colours by operating some cells at an ionization level such that the light output from the ultra-violet excited phosphor predomi. nates, and other cells at a higher ionization level such that the gaseous glow discharge light output predominates. If the filling includes a rare gas, e.g. a neon/xenon mixture, or argon, together with mercury, the colours associated with a discharge in the rare gas, and in the mercury, may be successively obtained by increasing the ionization level. In modified arrangements the scanning cells may be dispensed with (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), and optical filters may, in addition, be employed (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown).
