Abstract
1431313 Gas discharge display panels MATSUSHITA ELECTRONICS CORP 18 July 1973 [20 July 1972 25 Aug 1972] 34195/73 Heading H1D A character display discharge tube comprises an insulating base board 4 having an arangement of a number of discharge elements a 1 k 1 -a 7 k 7 , a 11 k 11 -a 17 k 17 , organized into groups each constituting a basic character form and each consisting of at least a cathode and an anode an insulating mask plate 5 located on said insulating base board and having many holes H 1 -H 7 , H 11 -H 17 individually leaving the respective discharge elements uncovered, and a transparent window plate 6 supporting a phosphor film 7 and located on said insulating mask plate 5, said discharge elements being spaced from said phosphor film at least by the insulating mask plate. The base board 4 comprises a stack of thin plates 1, 2, 3 of glass or ceramic. Each discharge element comprises an anode a and cathode k with the elements arranged in groups of seven. The anodes of each group are connected in common through a bus-bar extending between plates 2 and 3 to one of a number of terminals A 1 , A 2 &c. along one edge of the board. Corresponding cathodes of all the groups are connected in common through bus-bars extending between plates 1 and 2 to terminals k 1 to k 7 along another edge of the board. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) a control grid is disposed between the anode and cathode of each discharge element. All anodes are connected to a single common terminal, while the control grids of each group are connected in common to one of a number of terminals along one edge of the base board. The discharge tube may be filled with He, a mixture of He and Ne, He and A, or He, Ne and A or a mixture of such gases and Hg vapour.
