Abstract

1431825 Discharge display apparatus RCA CORPORATION 11 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 27662/73 Heading H1D A display device comprises a plurality of electrode arrays supported by a substrate and connected to terminals arranged along one edge and on both sides of the substrate by conductors passing through holes in the substrate and conductive layers on the substrate. A gas discharge device comprises electrode arrays 22a ... 22h, each electrode having a phosphor coating, grids 14 mounted on pads 52, 54, and a cathode assembly 16 with a thermionic wire emitter 136 opposite each array. The substrate comprises two ceramic sheets 24, 26 each with a row of terminals on a projecting part 12a. Holes extend from adjacent the electrodes of the arrays, the terminals, pads 34 and from the mounting pad of a getter 18, through sheet 24 and are filled or coated with metal. Conductive strips on the under side of sheet 24 provide connections between corresponding electrodes of each array and between grid pads 54 and terminals on sheet 24. A set of similar metal coated or metal filled holes extend through sheet 26 and strip conductors extend from each hole to terminals on the bottom of the sheet whereby array electrodes are connected to these terminals. These strip conductors are covered with an insulating layer 156. In operation anode potential is applied to each grid sequentially whilst the others are negative with respect to the cathode and anode potential is applied to selected groups of electrodes of the arrays. Electrons bombard only selected electrodes under the switched on grid. Each array comprises a figure of eight with two additional vertical centre members and a decimal dot interconnected on the top face of plate 24 by a strip 51. The electrode arrays are of successive layers of Mo and Ni coated with ZnO : Zn phosphor. A perforated mask may be placed under the grid to more clearly delineate elements of the array. In a glow discharge device the phosphor layer and cathodes 16 are omitted and the grids may be of a shape corresponding to the arrays or a mask may be placed between the grids and arrays. The display devices are used in calculators, weighing scales and clocks with integrated circuits which may be on the substrate. In clocks electrodes forming the letters a.m., p.m. may be added.
