Abstract

1388216 Cathode-ray tubes ISE ELECTRONICS CORP 23 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 24570/73 Heading HID In a flat fluorescent character display tube of the type wherein a plurality of character display units are disposed in a sealed envelope comprising a transparent upper half 1 and a lower half in the form of an insulating substrate 2 which are hermetically joined together, each of said character display units comprises a plurality of segment electrodes 7 printed on said substrate and arranged in a predetermined configuration, a perforated electrode 11 being provided to contain said segment electrodes 7 in its perforations 11a and a control grid 12 being mounted on said perforated electrode 11 to cover said perforations 11a and said segment electrodes 7. The electrodes 7 are coated with a phosphor. The mesh control electrode 12 (Fig. 4) is connected to the electrode 11 which engages two contacts 8 printed on the substrate 2. Conductive members mounted along both sides of the display units (Fig. 2, not shown) support a filament for each unit, the filaments being connected in series between contacts 9 printed on the substrate 2. A metal film strip 10 printed on the substrate 2 is heated by passing a current between two terminals 13a, 13b (Fig. 5) secured to a flange 1b of the member 1 to seal the member 1 to the substrate 2. Corresponding electrodes 7 of the units are connected in common by conductors printed on the rear or an intermediate surface of the substrate 2 which may be of laminated construction.
