Heading G4H [Also in Division H1] A luminous display system comprises a plurality of units 12, which may be contained in a common envelope, each unit having an anode consisting of a plurality of selectively energizable parts for building up a desired character, and a grid to which a blocking potential may be applied. Characters circulating in dynamic store 18 are applied serially to decoder 21 the outputs P 1 -P 0 of which are connected to different combinations of anode parts in each unit 12. The units 12 are selected in turn, in synchronism with the characters applied to decoder 21, by counter 22 which applies positive potential to its outputs T in turn. Abnormal luminescence may be prevented by applying positive potential to the cathodes for the initial part of each character display period, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). If the cathodes are connected in series, the circuit of Fig. 11 (not shown) prevents the anodes from becoming more positive than the cathodes, in the cut-off state of the tube, as the result of the combined voltage drop across a large number of tubes.
