Abstract
1396944 Gas discharge display panels HITACHILtd 18 July 1972 [19 July 1971] 33598/72 Heading H1D A gas discharge display panel comprises a first insulating plate 1 having a group of first electrodes C15, C16 &c. disposed on a major surface thereof which faces a second insulating plate 5 and a second electrode 4 disposed between the insulating plates and having perforations overlying said first electrodes. In the panel shown the first electrodes C 15 and C16 are two of seven cathode segments arranged in figure eight formation for numeral display, elec - trodes C25 and C26 being members of an adjacent group for displaying a second digit. A spacer 2 has perforations 3 corresponding to the electrodes C15, C16 &c. Alternatively (Figs. 5A and 5B, not shown) the spacer may have a larger aperture or apertures overlying one or more groups of electrodes. The panel may have a filling of neon to provide a red-orange display but the gas filling is preferably argon, xenon, krypton or a mixture of argon and mercury vapour, all of which have a high UV emission, the perforations being partially filled with fluorescent material 7. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) an additional insulating plate is provided and the anode electrodes 4 which are in mesh form and the fluorescent material 7 are disposed on different plates. A further alternative embodiment (Figs.6A and 6B, not shown) comprises a group of parallel cathode strips and a group of orthogonal anode strips which have perforations at the crossing points of the electrodes.
