Abstract
1378969 Glow discharge display tubes MATSUSHITA ELECTRONICS CORP 20 July 1972 [20 July 1971 21 July 1971] 33982/72 Heading H1D A glow indicator tube comprises an envelope containing a gas atmosphere suitable for providing cathode glow; an insulating plate 41 within said envelope and having an aperture extending therethrough; a plurality of cathode elements, some 43, 44, 45 and 46 of which are disposed on the top surface of said insulating plate, and the remaining 32, 33, 34 and 35 of which are disposed on the bottom surface of said insulating plate, the cathode elements being, positioned so that their glow regions extend over the aperture of said insulating plate, the cathode elements being oriented to form a matrix of a character to be displayed, the cathode elements being adapted r be electrically connected in different combinations whereby each combination provides a different character representation, and at least one anode element 37 lying in the same stratum as the cathode elements 32, 33, 34 and 35 disposed on the bottom surface of said insulating plate, the anode element being spaced from all of the cathode elements but positioned in operative relation to cause the cathode elements to glow. The tube further comprises ceramic or mica insulating plates 16 and 52 each having an aperture in register with the aperture in plate 41, a mask plate 53 either of metal or of opaque insulating material having slits 55 to 61 forming a figure eight and a circular aperture 62, and a face plate 65 which is sealed to a base 12 provided with a tubulation for exhausting the tube and admitting a filling of neon or argon. An anode element 38 crosses a cathode element 46 beneath the decimal point aperture 52. If the plate 53 is of metal it is connected to a positive potential of less than 70% of that applied to the anode elements so as to trap shuttered cathode material and to act as a shield between the digits of the display. The cathode and anode elements originally extend from frame members (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) which are removed when the tube is assembled. The tube may be mounted on a board (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) and the ends of the cathode and anode elements bent down for connection to metal strips painted or sprayed on the top and bottom surfaces of the board.
