Abstract

1404644 Gas discharge display panels NIPPON ELECTRIC CO Ltd 27 Sept 1972 [29 Sept 1971] 44704/72 Heading H1D Coatings 31 and 32 of a material, e.g. magnesium oxide, having a high secondary emission ratio are provided either on dielectric films 18 and 19 covering crossed electrode arrays 16 and 17 disposed on dielectric plates 11 and 13 of a plasma display panel or on the electrodes themselves at least on the portions of the coatings or electrodes which are adjacent the discharge spaces 14. The coatings protect the films 18 and 19 which may be of glass containing lead oxide, bismuth oxide or vanadium oxide from deterioration by the discharge, and also reduce the firing voltage of the panel. The plates 11 and 13 may be of soda lime glass and the electrodes of at least one of the arrays 16 and 17 are of transparent conductive material, e.g. tin oxide. The assembly is sealed together by glass frit 25 and may be filled with neon or a mixture of inert gases at a pressure of 300 torr. through a tubulation 26. The coatings 31 and 32 may alternatively be of calcium oxide, aluminium oxide, barium oxide or silica. The invention may also be applied to panels having segment electrodes and panels having no central spacer.
