Abstract
1360356 Cathode-ray tubes INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 31 May 1972 [29 June 1971] 25360/72 Heading H1D A display device comprises an envelope filled with ionizable gas and containing a plurality of strip-like cathodes 108 and 110, Fig. 1, an anode 114, and a fluorescent screen 122 deposited over transparent strip electrodes 118 extending at right angles to the cathode strips. In operation the anode 114 is earthed and -250 V is applied to the start cathode 108 to generate a glow discharge which is sequentially transferred along the cathodes by the sequential application of -250 V to each of the lines 134, 136 and 138 whilst the other two are maintained at -150 V. The glow discharge provides a source of electrons, and ions are prevented from bombarding the screen by inclining the anode strips 114 as illustrated. When a particular cathode is energized, selected electrodes 118 are also energized so that electrons impinge on display points corresponding to the intersection of the cathode with the selected electrodes. The selected electrodes 118 may be energized with a constant voltage of 6-10 volts for an alphanumeric display, or with a variable analogue or digital voltage to provide a grey scale. For a colour display the groups of cathodes connected to lines 134-138 may correspond to three different colours, the luminescent screen then comprising strips of different colour phosphors.
